Sliding Steering Shafts

Enhancing vehicle performance and safety with Pailton Engineering’s sliding steering shafts

At Pailton Engineering, we design and manufacture high-quality sliding steering shafts tailored to meet the unique demands of various industries including commercial and military vehicles.

Our engineering team can design sliding steering shafts to any specified length and configuration to suit your vehicle's requirements.

Technical specifications

•    Working angle: 35 degrees
•    Maximum torque: 450 newton metres (332 ft-lbs)
•    Fatigue load: 170 newton metres (125 ft-lbs)
•    Designs adhere to relevant ZGN and SMMT specifications, from 1 x 79 for EU standards to 1 x 36 for US standards.
•    Wide range of interface options and serration specifications.
•    Detachable or fixed universal joints.

We understand that different applications require different maintenance regimes. Some vehicles, such as those that may encounter wading scenarios, need components designed for regular maintenance.

To address this, we incorporate grease nipples to allow regular lubrication at set maintenance intervals. We also design sliding steering shafts with gaiters and covers for ingress protection.

The bearings within the universal joints can have regrease points on both sides. Within the tube arrangement, there can be an additional grease port if necessary.

Alternatively, some applications favour “grease for life”. Pailton Engineering can provide sealed units, designed for longevity with no maintenance.

Our shafts can also accommodate phasing. We can calculate the ideal angle of the intermediate shaft for the installation envelope. This ensures optimal performance in a range of applications.

The design includes a stroke within the component. This provides a working envelope that can accommodate any adjustment above it. For example, if the steering column has tilt and telescopic adjustment, the sliding steering shaft will adjust accordingly.
